The journey starts amidst the thrilling, fragrant chaos of Pak Klong Talad—the famed Bangkok Flower Market. Next, you will cross the river via the Chao Phraya Sky Park. This brings you directly to the Thon Buri District. Here, among winding narrow alleys, you will find one of Bangkok’s hidden gems: the centuries-old Portuguese Community, which is focused around the iconic Santa Cruz Church. Indeed, this area is the ultimate example of hidden Bangkok and a genuine look at local life. Therefore, prepare yourself for a profound journey off the beaten path.

Ready to see the route? Then jump straight to the map.

Bangkok Flower Market: Chaos and Colour

The walk begins in the vibrant heart of the city. The Bangkok Flower Market allegedly operates 24 hours a day, but I haven’t checked this. Farmers and vendors arrive constantly. They unload enormous, colorful piles of jasmine, lotuses, marigolds, and orchids. Historically, the area was a floating market for produce. It was first established during the reign of King Rama I. This intense atmosphere truly shows local life. Wander through the covered stalls and watch workers quickly string thousands of flowers into garlands. The market is incredibly photogenic. However, it is huge and easy to get lost, so move on when you are ready.

Chao Phraya Sky Park: A Unique Bangkok Experience

Leaving the Bangkok Flower Market behind, you approach the river. The walk takes you high above the water using the recently opened Chao Phraya Sky Park to cross to Thon Buri. This pedestrian bridge offers amazing views of the river and downtown Bangkok. The structure repurposed the skeleton of an unfinished electric train project. It was officially opened in 2020. The viewpoint is a little-known part of this Bangkok walking tour. Indeed, this unique urban development project feels like a true boundary. You are finally stepping off the beaten path.

Bangkok’s Hidden Heritage: The Portuguese Community

You now enter the Thon Buri District. The atmosphere shifts immediately. After crossing the river, you explore narrow, shaded alleyways. This area, known historically as Kudi Chin, is a genuine Bangkok hidden gem. Its history goes back to 1767, when, following the fall of Ayutthaya, King Taksin granted the land to Portuguese soldiers. They had offered vital military support, and their legacy remains strong. Look for bakers selling Khanom Farang, a traditional cupcake.

The entire area centers around the beautiful Santa Cruz Church. This quiet enclave, with its quiet, narrow alleys, clearly defines a historic Bangkok neighborhood. Take time to feel the peaceful atmosphere and maybe grab a drink and something to eat. The map highlights some unique cafes and restaurants.

Phra Borommathat Maha Chedi

Across the river, a visible white landmark anchors the landscape. This is the magnificent Phra Borommathat Maha Chedi at Wat Prayurawongsawat Worawihan. The great white Chedi was constructed during the reign of King Rama III. It serves as a beautiful counterpoint to the Christian dome of the Santa Cruz Church nearby. Your walk will therefore explore the close, long-standing relationship between Thailand’s royal history and its diverse faiths.

Memorial Bridge: History Over the River

The route returns across the river using the Memorial Bridge. The bridge’s official name is the Phra Phutta Yodfa Bridge, and it opened in 1932. It commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Chakri Dynasty. Consequently, it is a key landmark in the area. From this vantage point, you can look back at the entire area that has been explored. It is a perfect spot for reflection.

Chao Phraya Express Boat: Bangkok’s Water Highway

The journey concludes at the nearby Memorial Pier. The Chao Phraya Express Boat offers an easy ride back to the central city and an easy interchange with the Sky Train at Sathorn Pier. Boarding the boat is a great way to enjoy another unique Bangkok experience. So, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Indeed the Chao Phraya Express Boat service can be used to start or finish several walking tours to less touristy parts of Bangkok such as the Amulets, Temples, and Ice Cream walk and The Ultimate Walking Guide to Khlong San, Bangkok’s Riverside Gem.

Join me and explore the sights, sounds, and flavours of this off-the-beaten-path route. Wander through alleyways, where you can witness a slower pace of life, connect with the local culture, and find a quieter, more authentic hidden Bangkok away from the main tourist trails.

Directions

One convenient way to access this route is to take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to the Memorial Bridge Pier. However if you wish to come by train then the Sanam Chai MRT station is close by. My detailed guide starts and finishes at the Memorial Bridge Pier but also describes the route from Sanam Chai MRT station. From either starting point, it is a short walk to the Bangkok Flower Market1 📷. Afterwards my detailed guide will enable you find the entry to  the Chao Phraya Sky Park2 (05:00 to 20:00) 📷, which otherwise could be difficult to locate.

After crossing the river, walk along the riverside promenade (05:00 to 22:00) 📷. This leads directly to the Portuguese Community3 📷. To conclude the walk, retrace your steps, but divert via Phra Borommathat Maha Chedi4. Finally, cross back over the river via the Memorial Bridge5 📷. Board the Chao Phraya Express Boat from the Memorial Bridge Pier to Sathorn Pier or other pier convenient to you. Total distance 3.8 km.

Accessibility

Accessibility for this walk is a key consideration. The return crossing via the Memorial Bridge requires ascending and descending steps. However, the Chao Phraya Sky Park offers an alternative. The park has lifts on both the Bangkok and Thon Buri sides of the river. This means the Sky Park route could be used for the entire round trip if needed. The actual walk across the river via the Sky Park bridge uses only gentle slopes. These slopes help negotiate the viewing and garden areas.
